The Rise of the "AI-Assisted Marketer": Your Role in the New Era
Artificial intelligence is not just a buzzword anymore; it's a co-worker. Over the past year, we’ve seen countless headlines about AI implementations, from stunning successes that slash content creation time to high-profile failures that miss the mark. Using AI to generate thousands of good quality product descriptions in a single day for example, will dramatically increasing a site's SEO value or working AI into complex analytics workflows can significantly reduce reporting/analysis time and maximise the insights from the data.
On the flip side, we’ve all seen the viral screenshots of AI-generated ad copy that’s nonsensical or, worse, offensive. Bad actors are, of course, maximising the benefits of AI too. I’ve been hammered recently by adverts for this little Panda:
I’ve been super impressed with the quality of these videos, but it’s obvious that’s it’s not legit. A few seconds of digging and you can find the real thing on Aliexpress/Temu.
The real Pandy….
Disappointing, yes.
Incredibly high quality AI video ad creation that most of the biggest and best brands aren’t using… also yes.
So for us good actors, us marketers that want to do honest job, and actually represent our business, products and services effectively, we need to step it up, right?
This isn’t about AI replacing you. It's about AI empowering you. The real question isn't whether AI will take your job, but how you’ll use it to supercharge your marketing team. The role of the marketer is evolving from an executor of manual tasks to a strategic leader who uses AI as a powerful tool.
The Core of the Issue: The AI-Human Hybrid
AI can handle the data, the repetition, and the scale. It's a must-have for the modern marketing team. Think about it:
Data Analysis: AI can sift through terabytes of customer data in seconds to identify trends and preferences that would take a human team weeks to uncover. It can predict which customers are likely to churn or which ad creative will perform best before you even launch a campaign.
Personalisation at Scale: Imagine creating a unique email for every single person on your list, or a different website homepage for each visitor. AI makes this not only possible but practical, tailoring messages and offers to individual behaviour without manual intervention.
Efficiency: From scheduling social media posts at the optimal time to A/B testing thousands of ad variations simultaneously, AI automates tasks that once ate up valuable time. This allows your team to move faster and focus on what truly matters.
But here’s the crucial part: while AI is powerful, it lacks a critical element—the human touch. AI can write a sentence, but it can’t tell a story that resonates on a human level. It can analyse audience data, but it can't represent the voice of the customer (VoC) with genuine empathy.
This is where your role becomes more important than ever. Your job is to be the brand's soul. You're the one who ensures the brand's tone of voice remains consistent and authentic. You're the one who understands the nuances of human emotion and cultural context. You're the one who crafts compelling, relatable content that connects with people, not just algorithms. You hold the final say on what goes out the door, ensuring it reflects the brand's values and speaks to its audience in a way that AI alone cannot.
A Pragmatic Outlook on the Future
The future of marketing isn't about AI vs. humans; it's about AI with humans. The most successful marketing teams will be those that embrace this hybrid model. They will use AI to handle the tedious, data-heavy work, freeing up their team to focus on high-impact, creative, and strategic initiatives. This means more time for building community, developing unique campaigns, and fostering real human connections.
Your value isn't in what you can do manually, but in your ability to think critically, creatively, and strategically. AI is a tool, and like any tool, its effectiveness depends entirely on the person wielding it.
